Both ranger and paladin are iconic D&D, they will make their way to playable classes in time.

Its disappointing that Paladins aren't in yet, as every main character I've ever had in D&D (whether PnP or computer game) has been a Paladin. The inability to create one might be a dealbreaker for me with this game.

Well there is already two forms of fighter, a defender and a striker, so I would think that will be it on fighter for a while. We have another striker with the trickster rogue. A devout cleric as a leader, and a control wizard as a controller. We also know that there are 8 classes ready to go on release. Known is 1 defender, 1 leader, 1 controller and 2 strikers. While it would make sense to add in another defender, leader and controller, we all know that they will over emphasize strikers, all MMO's do. So I am betting there is a third striker in the mix. Also knowing that the Menzo Renegade is a special flavor element that is in the game from release makes me think they will play off the popularity and love of the Drizzt fans. So yes I believe there will be a Ranger as one of the classes, if not upon release, soon thereafter. However I believe that it will be more of the dual wield tempest flavor than any sort of ranged build. A Warlock is also a strong possibility as well, especially with Tieflings in the mix.
If I had a guess as to the next defender it would indeed heavily weight a Paladin. A Warden would be an interesting choice but it is much less classic and Battlemind would simply be amazing but psionics are probably a ways off. All of this being said, since it is the Forgotten Realms a Swordmage has to weight heavily in there as well. Given that there is already a traditional shield blocking type of defender, it would add a lot more flavor for the next defender added or revealed to be a Swordmage so this is my hopes, even though I love me some pally action.
For the next leader class we see Warlord would be the classic choice, however once again, taking into account the flavor of the Forgotten Realms, I think that Bard is the likely choice. It just makes too much sense with the Harpers around.
Controllers, so many just default to the Wizard that I am not sure they will introduce a second one anytime soon. This may be the sacrifice made to add in another striker, just having one controller around to play for quite some time. The obvious choice for the next controller introduced would be a Druid. Sure the Invoker has some merits but from a flavor and diversity stand point, I would be surprised if it was anything but a Druid as the next controller introduced into the game.
There are some other obvious choices for strikers missing right now as well, from the assassin to the sorcerer to the barbarian and monk. At some point I think you will see all of these classes added and then some. At some point, I expect Neverwinter Online to have more class choices than most of us are used to seeing in these games.

I'm a bit saddened that there are no paladins starting out, so I'll have to suffice with a Guardian Fighter for now. I have hope for the future, though!
I think it would be great to see a Bard class done, especially if done well. I could see a Bard being a Controller class, easily. Or perhaps Psionicist.

I think you should consider Paragon trees also, Paladin might be a Paragon class under Guardian Fighter!

I'd be PISSED if they put pally under fighter, that's like saying warlocks are wizards...it's just not right.

I loved my time in this game this past weekend.. there are may aspects I am excited about. My ONLY, and I do mean only big disappointment was the lack of classes. I am 35, and have been playing DnD since I was 12... and the magic of the game always came from the diversity available to the players. ranger/paladin are a must IMO also.. sorcerer or a striker type caster also.
